Active Weather Pattern for the West into the Plains

A strong Pacific storm continues to track across the Great Basin. Heavy snow is expected across the higher elevations and heavy rain across lower terrain. Strong gusty winds will make for additional hazards for travelers. These winds will bring increasing fire weather concerns for the southern High Plains. A cool and wet weather pattern will return to the Northern Rockies late Sunday, and remain in place through at least Wednesday. Below normal temperatures will bring periods of pass level snowfall, watch for slick conditions during overnight and early morning hours each day. There is a potential of light snowfall in area valleys of western Montana (Tuesday and Wednesday mornings) as well but only very light accumulations on non paved surfaces. .
Westerly wind gusts of 25-40 mph will be common Monday and Tuesday afternoons across the Northern Rockies. Even higher gusts of 35-45 mph (locally 50+ mph) are anticipated in Southwest Montana on I-90 east of Missoula to Butte. Watch for choppy lake conditions, localized tree damage, impacts to outdoor recreation and high profile vehicles.
