Wet High-elevation Snow and High Winds in the West; Severe Weather in the Central/Southern Plains

Higher elevation snow across the Great Basin and the Pacific Northwest into the northern Rockies will expand eastward into the central Rockies and will also bring quite a bit of wind. Windy and dry conditions in the Desert Southwest will cause Critical fire conditions. A Winter Weather Advisory above 6500 feet remains in effect for Northern Elko County and the Ruby Mountains/E Humboldt Range until 8 AM Monday. Additional 2-4 inches are expected around 6500 feet, with the high elevations receiving 6-10 inches. Slow down and use caution when traveling.
April 2024 Climate Summary. Northeastern and central Nevada was mostly warmer and, except for Winnemucca, drier than normal! (Averages and departures derived from the 1991-2020 climatological normal data base period.) Elko: April 2024 was warmer than normal with an average temperature of 47.3 degrees, which was 1.7 degrees above normal. Elko received 0.85” of rain and 0.5” of snowfall in April, which was below average for rainfall and snowfall. The averages for rain and snow in April are 1.05” and 3.3” respectively. The period of record for the Elko area began in 1888. Ely: April 2024 was warmer than normal with an average temperature of 43.7 degrees, which was 0.5 degrees above normal. Ely received 1.03” of rain and 3.6” of snowfall in April, which was below average for rainfall and snowfall. The averages for rain and snow in April are 1.07” and 5.3” respectively. The period of record for the Ely area began in 1893. Eureka: April 2024 was warmer than normal with an average temperature of 45.0 degrees, which was 1.5 degrees above normal. Eureka received 0.66” of rainfall in April, which was below average. The average rainfall for April is 1.08”. The period of record for the Eureka airport began in 1997. Tonopah: April 2024 was warmer than normal with an average temperature of 50.5 degrees which was 0.6 degrees above normal. Tonopah received 0.09” of rainfall in April, which was below average. The average rainfall for April is 0.29”. The period of record for the Tonopah area began in 1954. Winnemucca: April 2024 was warmer than normal with an average temperature of 48.6 degrees which was 1.0 degrees above normal. Winnemucca received 2.10” of rain and 10.1” of snowfall in April, which were above average for rainfall and snowfall, making April 2024 the 6th wettest and 2nd snowiest on record. The averages for rain and snow in April are 1.00” and 1.8” respectively. The period of record for the Winnemucca area began in 1877.
